School Healthy Eating Policy

Introduction

Our school is participating in the the EatSmart School Accreditation Scheme (ESAS) under the "EatSmart@school.hk" Campaign (ESS Campaign), with the aim of motivating and helping all primary schools in Hong Kong to formulate and implement healthy eating school policy, build up a learning environment conducive to healthy eating, and cultivate and strengthen a good eating habit among schoolchildren. We are committed to continuously promoting the importance of healthy eating to students, staff and parents, creating a healthy eating environment, encouraging them to develop good eating habits and practice them in life.

Our school has been awarded the Basic Accreditation and the Quality Snack Accreditation of the "Eat Smart Schools".

Implementation

To implement the above policy statement, our school will adopt the following measures:

Administrative Measures:

  • The school will appoint at least one dedicated staff member to coordinate a committee or group including parents to assist in the development and implementation of the healthy eating policy.
  • The school's healthy eating policy and all measures will be communicated to staff, parents and students each school year.
  • The implementation of the school's healthy eating policy and all measures will be reviewed and revised each school year.
  • Support will be provided to teachers responsible for promoting healthy eating in schools so that they have ample time to prepare activities and participate in relevant training.

Lunch

  • Our school lunch menu will be prepared by nursing staff in accordance with the latest edition of the "Nutritional Guidelines for Students' Lunch" compiled by the Department of Health.
  • Before the menu is announced to students and parents each month, the school will review the menu in advance to ensure that it does not contain "strongly discouraged foods" and does not offer desserts.
  • The approved menu will be announced to students and parents each month so that they can make informed choices.
  • Parents of students who bring their own lunch are encouraged to refer to the latest edition of the "Nutritional Guidelines for Students' Lunch" when preparing lunch boxes. It is emphasized that lunch should provide at least one serving of vegetables, not contain "strongly discouraged foods" such as fried foods, salted eggs, salted fish, etc., and not offer desserts.
  • If a student's self-brought lunch is found to be inconsistent with the healthy eating policy, the school will take measures to deal with it in accordance with the agreement with the parents.
  • A comfortable environment and ample time will be provided for students and staff to eat.
  • The habit of eating fruits will be promoted, and fruits will be provided to students during snack time, so that students can consume at least half a serving of fruits at school every day.

Introduction

Emphasizing balanced nutrition for the students, we provide meals based on the 3:2:1 ratio of grains, vegetables and meat recommended by the Department of Health. Chefs in our School’s "Meal Supply Team" prepare meals with appropriate concentration and texture according to students' chewing and swallowing abilities. In addition, special meals and meals for students with food allergy will be served in special lunch boxes to ensure their health.
